The glossary.

The words we use in the series, defined plainly — plus everything we’re reading.

Intro

These definitions are a culmination of 15 years of advanced study and the obtainment of a PhD in the Humanities. These definitions are not exhaustive or comprehensive, they are however, my understanding of complex concepts said in a way that resonates with more than just my academic community. The goal is understanding.

Binary/Dichotomy

Black and white thinking, or two poles that exist on a spectrum. However, the spectrum is ignored. Binary is the latin version of the Greek dichotomy: Binary thinking is when you think there are only two categories with the assumption that each exists in and of itself. However, a binary is whenever those two categories actually cannot stand alone, the absence of one constitutes the other.

Colonialism

The ideology that occupies the colonial mind. It is an ideology of ownership and exploitation.

Double Consciousness

Is what occurs in the mind of an oppressed person who has to perform a particular version of oneself for their oppressor and then has an additional performance of the self for their own community.

Code-Switching

It is the active process of choosing particular language to build acceptability depending on circumstance.

Cognitive Dissonance

The discomfort when your actions and behaviors contradict your values and beliefs; it is the distance between who you think you are and how you actually move through the world. This can be understood as the distance between your intentions and your impacts.

Ethics

The expansion of Christian morality to a universalism imposing a singular code of conduct of truth on everyone everywhere throughout all of history.

Harm

Injury, damage, or death of any form of the self; anything that has a negative impact on personhood.

Morality

Religion specific codes of conduct and beliefs that distinguish between right and wrong according to internal theologies.

Orientalism

The hyper-sexualization, fetishization of the east by the west; discursive power embedded in intellectualism and colonialism; it is the power to represent someone else in arenas that build credibility.

Discursive Power

The power to represent others before they are given the opportunity to represent themselves.

Politics

The public sphere.

Power

Power in control over the collective destiny of another group. The ability to affect the collective destiny of another group; power can only exist in relationship.

Race

The reduction of a group of people to a color.

Racism

The ideology that reduces a group of people to a color.

Self-Determination

The idea that a group of people who look the same, speak the same language, have the same values and beliefs, and inhabit the same geographical region have the right to determine who and how they are ruled.

Sovereignty

The sacrality of the nation state. The sacrality of the group of people and the geographical region that is entitled to self-determination.

Hegemony

The internalization of your oppressors standards which can never be met by the oppressed.

Authenticity

a completely fabricated concept of the self. The version of yourself that appears in “safe spaces.”

An ideology which is a way of thinking

State of being

Appropriation

identity theft. When a group or person that has power takes aspects of an oppressed cultural identity and makes it their own. Visibility and access allows appropriation which equals cultural theft. Cultural sharing can only occur when there is no power dynamic. Appropriation means there is a power dynamic with the more powerful stealing aspects of identity from the less powerful and then the person in power becomes the credible authentic source of that stolen cultural aspect.

Assimilation

When an oppressed group absorbs, internalizes, and then performs their oppressors cultural norms and attitudes in order to gain acceptance into the broader cultural milieu.

Acculturation

When the dominant culture has effectively appropriated an aspect of a non-dominant culture and repackages it so it becomes the new dominant form rather than the indigenous form.

Feminism

The radical ideology that women are people.
